Asian Games

» Second largest multi-sport event after the Olympics.
» Held once in every four years and also referred to as ‘The Asiad’. Regulated by Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), under the supervision of International Olympic Committee (IOC).
» The first Asiad was held in New Delhi and is said to be conceptualized by the then Indian Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
» The first Asian Games began on March 4,1951 in New Delhi.
» The Asian Games Association has choosen shining sun as its symbol.
» The AGF (Asian Games Federation) adopted 'Ever Onward', given by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, as the motto of the Asian Games.
» Japan (first eight Asiads) and China (next eight Asiads) have topped the medals tally in the 16 Asian Games held so far.
» The emblem of Asian Games is a 'bright full rising sun' with interlocking rings.
» The Maharaja of Patiala presented the Torch and the Flag for the first Asian Games and since then they have been carried from country to country.
» Cricket was included for the first time in games’ history as a sport in 2010 Asian Games.

India in Asian Games

❖ India has hosted the Asian Games on two occasions, in 1951 (inaugural) and 1982.
❖ India’s best performance was recorded in the first (fifteen Gold medals) and sixteenth (fourteen Gold medals) edition of the Games.
❖ India has always been ranked in the top 10 nations of the medal table, except in the 1990 Asian Games, when it finished 11th.
