Values are a set of principles or standard of behaviour which are held in high respect in society. Value means something worthwhile and precious. Thus values give meaning and strength to a person's character. There are personal values, moral and spiritual values and social values. Social values are always practiced in relation to society in which we live.
Responsibility, duty and service are the core of social values. The sense of brotherhood leads us to the essence of living. It recognizes the principle of 'live and let others live'. Social values are the epitome of moral and personal values. The field of social values is so vast that it comprises all the basic principles of good living. Those who value the social values work for the betterment of society. It makes one compassionate to others and selfless in the service of other members of the society. The sense of brotherhood can be cultivated through respect for rights of others, the principles of other religions and social customs of other communities.
Politeness and amiable behaviour leads one to be kind and helpful to others. It helps him avoid rudeness to others and be courteous and helpful at the time of need. A good living does not believe in evil for evil. A life of quality is touched with tenderness and selfless service. Mere uttering the words 'please' and 'thank you' does not make one courteous in real sense. On the contrary, one should learn to pay compliments even when one is hurt.
Humanism is a great quality that makes one realize the right of others to live in society with dignity. We are not living in tribal civilization. We have travelled far from the times of barbarism. Man has evolved religion to control one's baser instincts. Those who can do it have a right to be called humanists at heart. Cruelty not only to human beings but also to animals has to be avoided. One must refrain from cruel misdeeds and come to the help of the sick, the old and the needy. Such persons are willing to grant freedom of soul and action to those around them.
Lasting relationship between man and man is based on friendship, that is ever reciprocal and trusting. All of us need friends on personal level. But those who are the friends of the other members of the society are beneficent and followers of basic values that make society worth living. Concern for others and gratitude for their good deeds make one a true friend. Love is the greatest boon God has conferred on us. We can return this love by showing love to those around us by spreading message of justice, equality and service. In fact service born out of sympathy is the essence of good life. Service means concern for the problems of others and helping them tide over their difficulties. True service implies giving others without expectation from others.
The image of society is reflected in the character of the members who inhabit it. Today India is passing through the worst phase when the place of social values is at nadir. Our leaders are after their own loaves and fishes. They sow the seeds of discord to maintain their own positions. They indulge in flouting personal, moral and social values. The high profile bureaucrats have taken to immoral and corrupt practices. The judiciary is meant to hand out justice but they are mired in corruption. It is no exaggeration to say that lost to every sense of value based life, our society presents a tribal look. It is a bleak scenario for those living in present times.
