Dear Raj ,
Last night all of us were disturbed when the news was telecast about the massacre in the Lai Chowk of Srinagar by militants. Mother was greatly dis¬turbed. It is good that you have got a very lucrative job and we are proud of you in this regard. It is not easy to get a job in G.E., one of the first 20 multinational companies. The prospects are very bright.
At the same time the family over here is torn with anxiety. It is difficult to say whether it is a right step on our part to permit you to join your first posting at Srinagar. The conditions are getting tougher day by day. No part of Kashmir is unaffected by militancy. Newspapers are full of news of bomb blasts, attack on security personnel, killing of innocent men, women and children of one com¬munity.
I myself had been in Srinagar for two years. I can well realise how life is insecure and fragile. Any thing can happen to any one. Terrorists choose their soft targets at random and spray bullets to cause killing and panic among the residents.
I once again advise you to take up accommodation in the company guest house where security arrangements are supposed to be foolproof. Living in a private hotel is very risky. You can't distinguish between a terrorist and a tourist. One is likely to fall prey to the designs of the militants. Life in private hotel is marked with anxiety. In a company guest house you will be living among familiar faces and the security arrangements are supposed to be strict. Moreover don't try to move out after dusk and also don't mix with strangers. One is not sure about the identity of the strangers. Terrorists are lurking in every nook and corner of the city. Please never venture out for any excursion unless you are accompanied by security men employed by the company. I hope you will make note of my advice and comply with it to the letter.
With love from parents and me,
Yours affectionately,
ABCD
