Holiday culture in India

Holiday culture in India

It is unimaginable that any country can afford two hundred days of holiday period for government sector employees. If it is so, the country is doomed. The administration of the country will remain paralyzed for 200 days. In other words a government servant or an employee in public sector undertakings works only for about 165 days on average a year. No employee of any other country in the world avails himself of about 200 days of holiday in a. In India working hours of a day are also fewer in numbers in comparison to other countries. The break up of holidays consist of 104 holidays on Saturdays and Sundays, 20 medical leave, 30 days of earned leaves, 8 casual leaves and other kinds of leaves which come to about 201 holidays in a year. There are instances when offices remain closed for days together. Even hospitals and essential services are affected by this holiday culture. The main reason is said to be—the diversity of Indian culture, religious holidays on account of different religious occasions, birth and death anniversaries of political leaders, cultural festival holidays. Even the death of ministers and political leaders are the occasions for national mourning. There are a number of examples when hospitals, banks and post offices remain closed for days together. Besides, the government employees enjoy leave by playing truant during office hours. The problems of poor persons remain unsolved. Moreover government employees are not imbued with sensitivity to the need of others. Any work that takes three days in foreign countries to complete requires in India at least three months. Government employees are apathetic to the needs of public. Even a man has to remain in custody for days together because of continuous holiday period. Young men and women prefer government jobs, because sloth and inefficiency are the hallmark of a government employee today. This factor also gives rise to the practice of bribery. People are prepared to pay anything for getting the work done. So the facility of holidays to government employees on such a large scale at the cost of government exchequer should be immediately done away with.
