Government offices including the police force have not been able to shun their arrogant attitude towards the society. They still suffer from the hangover of British policy. The police as well as the government employees were used by the British government in their own interest. Those days they constituted a privileged class and still they continue to think so. Bureaucracy in India is designed to serve the rulers. They have never been allowed to think that they are in service to protect the weak and punish the guilty. On the contrary they are just in collision with the political leaders and criminals for their own material benefits. The police do not realize that they are a friend in need. They are not there to exploit and persecute the helpless and the innocent. It is a pity that the police are widely feared today. A policeman does not create a favorable impression on the psyche of a common man. They often indulge in violation of human rights. They do not show sympathetic concern for those who really need them. The score of cases of the police have come to notice where they are guilty of unethical and unsocial practices. Therefore, it is correct that corruption among policemen is largely due to political interference. Even the highest investigating agencies work under pressure from political leaders. One cannot deny that the police have to function under difficult situations. The honest policeman is considered a liability by the government and the political leaders. Unless the police are free from political interference, they can not be the protector of dignity of a common man.
