The evils of urbanisation

The evils of urbanisation

The migration of rural population to urban areas has created serious problems for the administration. Besides, the migration has caused the mushrooming of slums and pavement dwellers. People come to cities, particularly large cities in search of jobs. Illiterate villagers form a large chunk of labour class in industrial and commercial towns. Some persons move to cities for the lure of comforts and luxuries available in the cities. Young men and women come to urban areas for studies and other educational facilities available in the university towns. AU this lead to administrative law and order and serious pollution problems. Unplanned colonies spring up in the city where there are no proper sewage and drainage system. Social evils get rampant and results in infectious & communicable diseases. Young men and women fall prey to every kind of evil in the absence of traditional control over them. Congestion gives rise to every kind of pollution. As a result, urban population suffers from the menace of urbanisation. Migration from villages to cities is a regular phenomenon. The process of urbanisation is a natural consequence of advanced civilization. In fact urbanisation is not itself an evil. But the lack of efficiency on the part of the administrators is responsible for the evils resulting from rapid growth of towns. Government should have foreseen the possibilities of migration in the event of development of industries, trade and commerce. It is natural that in a poor country like India villagers, educated and uneducated, are bound to migrate to cities in search of employment and educational facilities. Technical institutions imparting professional and vocational education are located in large towns. Agriculture in India is already burdened with disguised unemployment. In fact India is an agricultural country. Indians can not progress unless there is improvement in the field of agriculture and living conditions in the villages. It is tragic that agriculture has not been able to provide sustained livelihood to the farmers. Hence urbanisation is a necessary evil.
