Consumer culture

Consumer culture

Consumer culture is a new way of life which has afflicted Indians recently. It is inevitable, though most of the ills in the society are because of consumer culture. Industrialization has brought about affluence in the society and people are anxious to get the taste of every kind of amenity. It is wrong to say that consumer culture is a part of the western influence. In fact the industrial development and the prosperity of the country depend upon the capacity of the consumers to buy items of modern comforts and luxuries. Without the spread of consumer culture it is futile to expect the advancement of the country. Indian industry has developed fast. From cycles to motor cars are manufactured in our country. If people don't buy them, industrial development may become stagnant. Exports will suffer and unemployment will increase. Consumer culture has, of course, given rise to many social evils. Youth in the towns and in the cities commit crime and violence to enjoy the use of modern luxuries. The moral values are getting eroded. The artificial glitter of modern civilization has blinded us to the need of honest and moral living. Consumerism has given rise to material culture. Even a sacred institution of marriage has been vitiated by the greedy dowry hunting grooms and their parents. In fact consumerism is a double edged weapon. Material prosperity of the country depends on the consumers, though consumers are subject to all kinds of evils as a result of material culture.
