No work, No pay

No work, No pay

Strikes and Bandhs in government Offices and public enterprises is a common feature in India. Even the police personnel have gone on strike in a number of states after independence. Strikes cause a lot of inconvenience to the public. Strikes in railways and public transport system result in untold sufferings to the public. Therefore, it is argued that the government employees should not be paid salaries for the period they remain on strikes. Strikes are there, both in public and private sector. The striking employees get money in lump sum after the strike is over. The strike period is considered a paid holiday by them. Those who do not believe in the policy of "No work, No pay" allege that to some extent government and the employers are also responsible for compelling the employees to go on strikes. The employers adopt inflexible attitude to the demands of the employees. This adamant attitude towards their employees force strikes on them. Generally the reasons for strikes are the disparity in salaries, promotion policies, dearness allowance and certain other facilities for employees. In such matters it is difficult to decide whether the policy of "No work No pay" should be followed or not. Inspite of all this, strike is an immoral and unfair weapon to intimidate the administration. The government suffers billions of loss when employees of Indian Railways or Indian Post and Telegraph or Banks go on strikes. In a country like India, employees must realise that rights and duties go together. A common man is never in sympathy when they go on strike. Their strikes harm the interest of the public most and cause untold loss of national income. Disputes should be solved by negotiations. Strikes, therefore, should be made illegal by law. Further the policy of "No work, No pay" should be strictly enforced.
