For the last 5 years the city is plagued by all sorts of pollution. The environment health of the city has degraded to a large extent. The slums clusters and industrial units and the use of generators have affected the environment of the city.
Meerut, next to Kanpur and Ghaziabad is one of the most polluted cities in the state. An estimated 300 ton of pollutants are emitted by vehicles. The vehicles are major source of nitrogen oxide, carbon mono-oxide and hydrocarbons. The effluents discharged into the nearby rivers is the result of polluting industries. Suspended particulate matter as a result of industrial pollution and gases have direct effect on the health of the citizens. Diseases relating to lungs function, brain, liver, kidney etc. adversely affect the health of the children and the old citizens.
Water pollution and sewage disposal are the major problems. Sewage material has been often found in the drinking water supply because of the defective drainage and sewerage system. The citizens do not get clean water. The infectious diseases are very common among, those living in unhealthy conditions. The residents of slums, pavement dwellers and unplanned colonies have made these problems worse.
The same is the case with noise pollution caused by automobiles, generators and public address system. The noise pollution level has crossed the permissible limits. As Meerut is developing into one of the major industrial towns of the state, it is utmost urgent to manage the problem of pollution. The district authorities have not paid any heed to the pollution caused by the use of generators in the residential areas. It is a menace to the peaceful and quiet living conditions for the citizens. Immediate steps should be taken to curb the use of generators in the residential areas. Moreover the effluents discharged from the local Distillery into Abu open drain passing through the heart of the city give out foul smell causing discomfort to the citizens. Inspite of many protests by the citizens the Mayor of the city is unconcerned.
