The Meerut police on Sunday night busted an alleged blood donation and serum collection racket that had been running under the cover of pathological lab for the last six years. Three people including a doctor and two suppliers of the blood have been arrested in connection with the racket.
According to the police sources the racket came to light when a man from Daurala was admitted to P.L. Sharma hospital. They were on alert from March when they found the body of Roop Singh, 45, a beggar on a road side pavement a week ago. The autopsy showed that he was suffering from chronic tuberculosis and anaemia. The doctor observed several needle pricks on his arm raising doubt in his mind. Further investigations revealed that he was a professional donor. The police started keeping a vigil at the pathological lab where many people donated blood for money.
According to the D.M., Meerut the admission of Mangal, a Daurala resident to the district hospital established co-relation of the patient and blood collecting bank. On interrogation he stated that since January he had donated blood sixty times. It was proved that he was a professional donor. All the three accused have been booked under various sections of the Indian penal code. They will be produced in the court tomorrow, where the police will seek 10 days remand of the accused.
Meanwhile, Mangal, the resident of Daurala had been discharged from the hospital. He is untraceable because he moves around the city and lives on pavements. According to legal sources the vital missing witness might pose a problem for the police to prove charges against the accused. The blood & serum have been seized by the police and sent for examination. The donors at the blood banks in the city are mostly beggars, drug addicts and poor laborers from adjoining districts and other states. The accused had their contact persons for luring the poor for donating blood.
