Polio is the worst disease affecting the babies and children making them handicapped for life. The World Health Organisation is engaged in eradicating this dreaded disease from the world. India should consider it a boon for the country. For the last one month through print media and cable T.V., there have been announcements about the launching of the camps for the administration of polio drops. The name of the clinics, the schools and the colleges were extensively published. It was to bring about awakening among the people about the grave effects of the polio attack.
The day fixed for the programme arrived yesterday. There was encouraging response both from the literate and illiterate families. The social workers, the Rotary club, the Lions .club and other NGOs started visiting the houses and asking the families to take their babies to the camps and clinics for administering polio drops. The programme started when the DM and a local MP administered polio-drops to a new born baby in the circuit house. The people were enthusiastic and were anxious to administer the drops to their children.

However the difficulty arose when persons belonging to a particular community did not allow the social workers to enter their localities. They turned back the doctors and social workers saying that it was anti-religious.
Every kind of persuasion fell flat on them. The police were also pressed into service and held the meeting with the responsible and educated persons and young men. They were properly enlightened about the disease and the authorities tried to impress upon them that it was the need of the hour to protect their children from this dreaded disease. However, they left the meeting saying that they were helpless in convincing the masses. It was, of course, a set back to the programme of eradication of the disease from the country. Overall, the programme was a great success because of the District Health Department, civil administration, doctors and social workers. The date for the second round of the programme will be announced soon.
