The pitiable condition of sports in India is a matter of concern. In international sports meets, India is hardly able to win one gold medal. It is really disappointing to realize that though India is a large country with second largest population in the world, we have to struggle even for one Olympic gold medal. Hockey, once the pride of India is in plight. Even in cricket after winning the World Cup 1983 we have not been able to achieve any significant victory. Where does the fault lie? Are our athletes and players to blame? Or is there any problem with policies of the government? The role of the sports for the development of personality and image of the country is very significant.
Accordingly the government of India proposed taking up various steps in this direction. But no tangible results have come out. Infrastructure for sports in villages and towns, identification of talent at grass root level, sports and physical education in educational institutions are the few steps which government proposed. Along with the above policy Government of India has constituted Sports Authority of India.
Sports Authority of India has suggested the following steps to overcome the shortcomings in the area of sports.
1. Sports hostels and scholarships
2. National physical fitness festivals for the age of 35 and above
3. Sports project development areas
4. Pay and play scheme
5. National Sports Talent Contest (NSTC) for the age group of 9 to 12 years
National welfare fund has been created by the state and central govt. However, the money spent on sports is far lower than the amount required for the uplift of the sports. Sports should be free from politics and politicians. In selection process politicians try to interfere and the result is that the genuine talents do not find place in international meets. In fact sports should be introduced on large scale in schools and colleges. The talented boys and girls should be given grace marks on the basis of their sporting abilities in their annual Examination. Still it would be better if sports are treated as a separate subject for higher studies at par with graduate and post graduate level. We have already a degree course of Bachelor of physical education. On these lines education of 1 sports should be imparted to the students in various fields. Private sector can play significant role in the promotion of the sports.
It is no exaggeration to say that investment in the promotion of sports and physical education contribute to health and social well being of the people. Therefore, sports should be encouraged and talent search scholarships should I be awarded to budding talents.
